🗺️ Day 1: Machynlleth to Elan Valley
Distance: 40 miles
Highlights: Elan Valley Reservoirs, Claerwen Dam, Cambrian Mountains
Head southeast through the rolling Cambrian Mountains to the stunning Elan Valley. The drive itself is a joy, winding through open landscapes and forested trails. Spend the day exploring the Elan Valley Trail and Claerwen Dam — ideal for hiking, cycling, or just soaking in the peace.
Overnight Stay: Wild camping is possible in lay-bys along the valley (check Park4Night), or opt for Elan Valley Lodge for amenities.
🌄 Day 2: Elan Valley to Brecon Beacons via Builth Wells
Distance: 45 miles
Highlights: Builth Wells, Pen y Fan, Brecon Mountain Centre
Continue south through Builth Wells and into the Brecon Beacons National Park. Make time for a hike up Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, or explore the charming town of Brecon. The Brecon Mountain Visitor Centre offers spectacular views and local information.

Head southwest toward the Glamorgan coast. The beaches here are dramatic and less crowded than those in the north. Visit Nash Point Lighthouse and the golden dunes of Merthyr Mawr near Ogmore. Perfect for cliff-top walks and sunsets.

Begin your journey back north through Llandeilo. Stop at Carreg Cennen Castle, a cliffside ruin with incredible views. Then drive the quiet, winding roads past Llyn Brianne Reservoir and through the Cambrian Mountains for a scenic return to Machynlleth.
Overnight Stay: Return home or park up one last night at a forest lay-by with a view. Celebrate the journey with a local pub meal in Machynlleth.
